The Campsite
Is this the place for us?
Tomperrow lies in a sheltered wooded valley three miles outside of Truro, nine miles from either coast. This site is ideal for your Troop, Pack or Colony Camp as well as any other organisation wishing to Camp. Coming to Cornwall you will appreciate the Cornish Experience! We welcome not only members of the Scout Association but also the Guide Association, Boys / Girls Brigade, Duke of Edinburgh Award Groups and Schools.
The History of Tomperrow
The site was acquired by Truro District Scout Council in 1990 on a long lease from local landowner, Lord Falmouth. Additional land has been acquired to increase the size of the site, running on both sides of a stream. The site is also used as a District Scout training venue, as well as The District HQ.
Facilities
Tomperrow is well equipped with modern facilities.
Externally there is a toilet block with male and female toilets, hot showers and wash basins plus separate leader toilets & showers, an undercover eating area and two fields capable of accommodating up to 100 campers if necessary. There is a generous parking area as well as a hard standing outside the main building. There is a Campfire Circle down by the stream and a fully covered Chapel which can be used as an outside seated area adjacent to the main building.

Local Attractions
Tomperrow is only three miles from the City of Truro which is a friendly County town with a Cathedral, County Museum and plenty of good shops. It lies at the head of the River Fal which leads down to Falmouth. In the summer season boat trips run from Truro to Falmouth so you could go to Falmouth by boat, visit Pendennis Castle, go swimming at Ships and Castles, go bowling at Ocean Bowl, go to the beach and many other things as well. You could even return to Truro on the train or bus.
The Village of Threemilestone is within walking distance of the Campsite from where a regular bus service runs into Truro and to many other places in Cornwall. Threemilestone has a good Pub, a Spar shop, Chemist, Chinese takeaway, Post Office, Fish & Chip shop, Launderette, a Hairdressers & Barbers and a good sized Co-op.
Nearby is Sainsbury’s Supermarket with a petrol station and in Truro there are many big stores including a 24 hour Tesco, Iceland and Marks and Spencers all with car parking.
There are many visitor attractions in Cornwall that are all accessible for a day visit, these include the World’s largest greenhouse project at the Eden Project, housing plants and trees from all over the World. There are two Theme Parks – Flambards and Camel Creek Adventure Park as well as plenty of places which tell the history of Mining in Cornwall. At Gweek there is Seal Sanctuary and at Newquay an open air Zoo and Park. If you are interested in period houses and gardens there are many National Trust properties as well as lots of coastline that is owned and managed by them as well.
Local Activities
Of course with Cornwall being a peninsular there are many great beaches around the coast, many with facilities for surfing and kayaking, and some even having surf schools for groups to be able to learn. It is important that groups coming to Cornwall make an effort to instruct their children in beach safety and safe swimming as too many accidents happen through lack of basic understanding of simple yet important rules. You will be able to find some links on the links tab that will guide you to some very useful information for you to use.
Within 9 miles of Tomperrow are beaches on both North and South Coasts. The North Coast offers everything the Atlantic Ocean can throw at it which makes it ideal for surfing on the Atlantic rollers which makes Cornwall the best surfing spot in Britain, it also has some of the sandiest beaches with miles of golden sands.
On the South Coast you will be able to find many tranquil creeks and secluded coves as well as stunning views that Cornwall’s Coast is renowned for, from the most Southerly point in Britain at the Lizard with its famous Lighthouse right up to the River Tamar taking in the estuary’s of the Helford and Fal rivers. All around the coast is the Cornish footpath which is part of the National Coastal Footpath network.
There is canoeing and sailing tuition as well as hire on both freshwater reservoirs and the sea. Swimming is also available at Truro Leisure Centre, just one mile walk from Tomperrow. If however your group enjoy walking, then you are in luck! There are many circular routes around Tomperrow ranging from 1-2 miles upwards as well as many wonderful coastline and mining trail walks.
Cycling is also a good activity to enhance your programme with many routes around Tomperrow being bike friendly. There are also two major off road cycle routes having bike hire facilities – the Camel Trail, which runs from Padstow on the North Coast to Bodmin, and the Bissoe Trail which follows an historic Mining Railway route from Portreath on the North Coast to Devoran on the South Coast. (See links tab)
Other activities are Tenpin bowling at Truro Bowl and a multiscreen cinema at the Plaza in Truro. Horse riding is available at local stables, or if you wish you could always try the local Quad biking track or the Mini Tank driving range. Bishops Forum is an outdoor activity centre (booking in advance) (see Links tab) offering many activities including climbing and abseiling.
